James McHugh Construction Co. was founded in 1897 by James D. McHugh and by the 1920s was established as a general contractor. As it grew, McHugh developed its specialty: complex, large-scale projects for private structures and public works both locally and nationally. McHugh's ability to rise to the challenge of highly complex projects is evident in Chicago's skyline, with many top landmarks bearing McHugh's imprint. It is currently providing concrete services to make Trump International Hotel and Tower Chicago the tallest concrete high-rise in the world, and will soon break ground on the 82-story Aqua tower, with an undulating exterior design that has attracted international attention. Its reputation for innovation took off with the international landmark Marina City, when McHugh developed the fiberglass forms that allowed for its striking corncob shape. Its project management skills gained notice at Arlington Park racetrack, where McHugh completed work in a record 21 months despite estimates it would take almost double that time. Recent contributions to Chicago include the renovation of several of O'Hare International Airport's Terminal Two concourses, completed eight months early; the new Goodman Theatre; and the striking angles of the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum.
